Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is NeeHab?
NeeHab is a unique patient-controlled therapeutic device for static progressive stretching of the knee. It is designed to improve range of motion after total knee replacement, ACL reconstruction or trauma to the knee.

2. What is Static Progressive Stretch?
Static Progressive Stretch (SPS) is a technique using the biomechanical principle of stress relaxation and tissue elongation to restore range of motion (ROM) in joint contractures.
3. Who developed NeeHab?
NeeHab was developed by Bill Thomas, a patient that underwent two total knee replacements and needed a portable device to assist him regaining flexion.

4. How often should I use NeeHab?
NeeHab is a patient-controlled device that can be used 2 or 3 times a day for 10 to 15 minutes a session.
5. What should NeeHab feel like while using it?
NeeHab works using a static progressive stretch and the patient should have the knee in a flexed position where you feel a pull/stretch or a mild discomfort. If treatment becomes painful you may decrease the amount of flexion or stretch until you can increase the stretch comfortably.
6. Is NeeHab supposed to be used to prepare for knee replacement surgery or to help recover post knee replacement surgery?
Both. NeeHab can be used pre- and post-surgery to maximize flexion and accelerate knee rehabilitation.
7. Can the NeeHab device be used with physical therapy?
Yes, in fact we encourage that. Using NeeHab in conjunction with physical therapy can help speed up the recovery process.

One PT said that, “The NeeHab device allows me to perform soft tissue work or use a modality WHILE the patient is statically being stretched. It’s like having another set of hands to help me keep the patient’s pain lower and increase their range of motion efficiently.”

8. Has NeeHab been used in a clinical trial?
NeeHab was used in a large case study performed by a single orthopedic surgeon comparing NeeHab with physical therapy to physical therapy alone.
NeeHab with PT outperformed the PT group at 2, 4 and 6 weeks by increasing flexion by 16 degrees, 9.8 degrees and 11.6 degrees respectively. NeeHab patients averaged 102.9 degrees of flexion at 2 weeks, 117.3 degrees of flexion at 4 weeks and 125.3 degrees of flexion at 6 weeks.
9. Can I travel with NeeHab?
Yes, the device is lightweight and easily stored in a suitcase, backpack, travel case, etc. As such, NeeHab can be used with relative ease in a variety of locations, including home, office, hotel, etc.
10. If I order a NeeHab device how long does shipping take?
Once the order is placed it is packaged and shipped standard UPS or FedEx and arrives in 3 to 5 business days or less.

11. Do I have to pay for shipping?

12. Is NeeHab a credit card only purchase?
13. Does NeeHab have FDA approval?
The NeeHab device is a FDA listed device and received a Patent in December of 2018.
13. What is the difference between flexion and extension?
One of the major obstacles to hurdle after total knee replacement (TKR) is to gain range of motion around the knee joint.
Knee Flexion
Knee Flexion is described as the bending of the knee.
Knee Extension
Knee extension is when you straighten your knee to an angle of 0 degrees when extending it out in front of you.
14. What is considered the normal knee range of motion?
Normal range of motion is 0 to 150 degrees of flexion.
15. What degree of flexion is needed for most normal activities after a knee replacement?
The knee flexion range of motion for most normal activities is 125 degrees.
Range of motion for specific activities are:
-
Climbing stairs: 83 degrees
-
Sitting: 93 degrees
-
Tying a shoe: 106 degrees
-
Squatting to lift an object: 117 degrees
16. What is the recovery time for a knee replacement?
Patients have different ranges of motion pre surgery and people heal at different rates. With that in mind, most patients can take care of themselves within 3-6 weeks after total knee replacement. Flexion goals during recovery are 0-2 weeks, 65-90 degrees; 2-6 weeks, 115 degrees or more. It may take 4-6 months or up to a year to fully recover and realize the benefits of TKR.
